Belknap's birthplace is Damariscotta in Maine. She is the daughter of David Belknap and Louise Belknap. Her education was at Lincoln Academy located in Newcastle in Maine. She was interested in acting while attending Middlebury College, Vermont. When she earned her master's degree in Fine Arts, she studied at the American Conservatory Theater.
